Male Pheasant

The pheasant was originally introduced from the Caucasus region of Asia.

The male has spectacular colouring with copper plumage over most of its body and tail and with a very colourful red and blue head and neck.

The female is smaller and less colourful - a lighter brown with dark mottling.

Pheasants are game birds and many are bred and released into the wild every year for the shooting season.

The cock pheasants get into some quite vicious fights over the female in the breeding season.
