Roe deer are one of my favourite animals in the garden. They are beautiful, timid creatures who change throughout the year. I have to forgive them for eating all my favourite flowers!
In winter they have thick, dark coats to keep them warm. They blend into the woodland so well, you can only spot them by their white bottoms. The bucks lose their antlers each year and grow them afresh each winter as you can see from the first two photos below.
In spring, the moult their thick fur and go through a stage of looking very scruffy indeed. Once the moult is complete they have a beautiful ginger coat for the summer.
The fawns are born in May and stay with their mother throughout the summer. Sometimes there are twins which keep Mum very busy. She loves to hide them in the long grass for safety.
